Tight deadlines, mobile teams, and site-based workflows often conflict with heavyweight CAD setups. That’s where the AutoCAD web app has emerged as a practical answer to the friction between complex licensing and hardware dependencies.

The AutoCAD web app is an online-based CAD solution from Autodesk. It offers a cloud-based CAD platform for quick access to drawings on any device. But can this really lighten the software and hardware burden?

In this article, we unpack what the AutoCAD web app offers, how to use it, where it differs from desktop AutoCAD, and whether it’s ready to replace it. From licensing strategy to real user workflows, here’s what we’ve learned from the field.

What Is an AutoCAD Web App?

The AutoCAD web app is a cloud based CAD tool that runs entirely in your browser. It gives users the ability to view, edit, and annotate DWG files online. No installs, no specialised hardware.

The AutoCAD web app is designed for mobility. The files are stored in Autodesk Drive or your device’s local storage. You can also use several cloud storage services like Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive. This makes it practical for quick markups, reviewing changes, or adjusting plans on the fly.

But here’s where it gets tricky. While the interface mirrors some aspects of the desktop version, certain features are limited. This is why the AutoCAD web app is ideal for quick edits and markups, especially in field settings where carrying a fancy CAD workstation isn’t practical.

So, can I use AutoCAD on web? Yes, if you have a browser and internet, you’re in. But how do you use AutoCAD on the web?

How To Use AutoCAD Web App

Accessing the web version is straightforward and doesn’t require advanced setup.

Your team can access the AutoCAD web login portal from any modern browser.

From there, you need to sign in with an Autodesk account, then enter your Autodesk account credentials.

If you don’t have an account, create a free Autodesk ID to get started.

Once logged in, the interface allows you to upload a DWG or open one from your cloud storage.

In the AutoCAD web version, you can then use the core tools to make edits or annotations as needed. All changes are saved back to the cloud, ensuring everyone sees the latest version.

Differences Between AutoCAD Web App and Desktop AutoCAD

What’s the difference between AutoCAD and AutoCAD Web? A lot, especially when it comes to depth and performance. Let’s break down each difference below.

Platform and Access

AutoCAD Web runs on the web, and no installations are needed. As a web based CAD, it’s a plus for on-site staff or consultants who need access on personal laptops or tablets. Compare that with desktop AutoCAD, which needs a dedicated workstation and software installation.

Function (2D or 3D or Only Viewer)

The web app supports 2D drafting and annotation. You can view 3D files but not edit them. In contrast, desktop AutoCAD offers complete 3D design tools. So, if your workflow involves modelling, rendering, or visualisation, stick with desktop.

File Handling

In the web app, files live in the cloud. You can’t browse local drives directly—you’ll need to upload files to access them. This limits direct Xref management. Desktop AutoCAD handles both local and network drives, with more flexible file control.

Block Libraries

Web app users can insert existing blocks and access recent libraries, but block editing is limited. No Block Editor, no tool palettes. The desktop version lets you build dynamic blocks, manage palettes, and customise extensively.

Licensing Model

Anyone can use the free viewer with a basic Autodesk ID. To edit, you need a paid license. AutoCAD or LT subscribers get web access included. Or, you can subscribe to AutoCAD Web standalone. The pricing licenses of AutoCAD web as of September 2025 are A$160 for annual subscription and A$15 for monthly.

In some cases, you might also evaluate open source CAD software or other AutoCAD alternatives for specific tasks. But always keep in mind the compatibility and support trade-offs of those options.

Feature Comparison Table

Key Aspects

AutoCAD Web App

AutoCAD Desktop

Platform

Runs in web browser (no installation needed)

Installed application (Windows/Mac) on a local computer

Device/OS Support

Any device with a modern browser (OS-agnostic)

Windows and macOS (separate desktop versions)

Internet Requirement

Yes – internet required (online use only)

No – works offline after installation

2D Drafting

Yes – full 2D drawing and editing tools

Yes – full 2D drawing and editing tools

3D Modeling

No – can view 3D objects but cannot create/edit 3D models

Yes – complete 3D modeling and visualization support

Performance

Optimized for moderate file sizes; very large drawings may be slower

Optimized for large projects (uses local hardware power)

Storage & Files

Uses cloud storage (Autodesk Drive, Dropbox, etc.); upload/download for local files

Uses local or network drives by default; optional cloud integration

Block Libraries

Basic: insert existing blocks, limited new block creation

Advanced: full Block Editor, dynamic blocks, tool palettes

Customization/Add-ons

Not supported (no LISP, plugins, or API)

Fully supported (LISP scripting, plugins, APIs available)

Licensing & Cost

Included with AutoCAD/LT subscription or A$160 per year standalone; free viewer mode available

Requires AutoCAD or LT subscription (higher cost)

Ideal Use Cases

Quick edits, on-site markups, viewing drawings remotely

Extensive drafting, detailed design, large complex projects

Can AutoCAD Web Replace AutoCAD Desktop?

In its current state, the AutoCAD Web app is not a complete replacement for the desktop AutoCAD. So, what are the limitations of AutoCAD Web? The web app lacks many advanced features (3D modelling, extensive customisation, high-end rendering) and relies on an internet connection.

Autodesk developed the web version as a complementary tool for scenarios. For example, you need quick last-minute edits, on-site access to drawings, or when you’re away from your main PC. It’s not a one-to-one substitute for all CAD work.

Typically, we empower our clients to use AutoCAD Web to reduce license costs. Just equip site engineers or project managers with the web version for markups. Meanwhile, the drafters retain the full desktop version.

But suppose your work involves complex 3D models or custom plug-ins. In that case, the desktop AutoCAD remains essential. This is why you should continually evaluate your team’s needs; do they need site access or design depth?

Where to Go from Here?

The AutoCAD web app adds flexibility for on-the-go tasks. However, balance its ease against project needs. A desktop remains essential for heavy drafting or 3D.

If you need support for a full AutoCAD license, or the LT version, Interscale is here to help.
