A Revit template is a preconfigured project file that establishes the standards, settings, views, schedules, annotations, and workflows used across Revit projects. It provides a consistent starting point for project teams and helps ensure modelling and documentation standards are applied from the beginning of a project.
A Revit project template (.rte) defines your project’s setup — including views, sheets, title blocks, annotation styles, and system families — so every new project starts with consistent standards and settings.
A Revit family (.rfa) is a predefined component that can represent model elements (like doors or furniture), annotation symbols, or detail items. Families make it easier to place, manage, and reuse standardised content across projects.
Revit templates create a standardised project environment that teams can use across multiple projects. By defining modelling standards, documentation settings, and project structures upfront, firms can maintain greater consistency between teams and reduce time spent configuring new projects.
A Revit template can include project parameters, view templates, sheet standards, schedules, annotation styles, object styles, browser organisation settings, worksets, and documentation requirements. These elements create a structured framework that guides project delivery and supports consistent BIM workflows.
Revit templates establish common modelling and documentation standards before project work begins. Teams can use the same project structures, naming conventions, and documentation settings across multiple projects. This helps maintain consistency and improves collaboration between disciplines and project teams.
Large architecture and engineering firms often require consistent BIM standards across different offices and disciplines. A standardised Revit template provides a shared project foundation that teams can use regardless of location. This helps maintain consistency across projects while supporting organisational growth.
Interscale helps Australian AEC firms develop and optimise Revit templates that align with organisational standards, BIM workflows, and project delivery requirements. The focus is on creating structured project environments that improve consistency, support collaboration, and establish a scalable foundation for BIM operations.

What Revit LT can’t access:
1. Global Parameters:
The North Arrow Symbol cannot be automatically adjusted for every Titleblock. You can get around this with Shared/Project Parameters though, just more manual work
2. View Filters:
We have View Filters applied for Interscale Pro and Interscale Elite. Revit LT cannot use View Filters, so they won’t be able to be adjusted in the views, so the visual style may not work for Company Standards and cannot be adjusted.
3. APIs and Automation:
Revit LT cannot use Dynamo or other plug-ins
Investing in an Australian-specific Revit Template delivers efficiency, quality, and compliance. Compliance comes first: AS 1100 conventions, ISO 19650 requirements, Line Weights, Hatch Patterns, and Text Heights are built in. New Sheets are review-ready rather than needing extensive mark-ups. Pre-set View Templates, Title Blocks, and Schedules cut hours from early project stages, allowing designers to focus on Architecture and Engineering rather than adjusting Units and Phases.
Consistency follows. With a single source of truth for Annotations and Revit Families in Australia, every Drawing Set appears uniform—whether drafted in Melbourne or on site in Perth. This uniformity reduces coordination errors and speeds up Clash Detection reviews. Efficiency is the final advantage. Automated Door, Window, and Finish Schedules pull live data, reducing manual counts and errors. Multiply these time savings across multiple projects, and the return on investment in a robust Template becomes clear: more billable hours reclaimed and less stress.
While no single mandatory standard exists, there are key references that guide best practice. The AS 1100 series defines conventions for technical drawings in Australia, covering Line Types, Dimensioning, and Symbols, ensuring clarity in 2D outputs from BIM models. ISO 19650 provides the international framework for managing information over the whole life cycle of a built asset using BIM, and is increasingly adopted in Australia.
We also had the ANZRS (Australian and New Zealand Revit Standards) initiative, which focused on Naming Conventions, Parameters, and Revit Families. Although the ANZRS website is no longer active, its principles remain widely used and valuable for building Revit Libraries in Australia. Together, AS 1100, ISO 19650, and ANZRS-inspired practices ensure interoperability, consistency, and reliable BIM content.
Finding the right Revit Template in Australia can feel daunting, but knowing where to look makes it easier.
Regional Revit Content Packs can be downloaded via your Autodesk Account Portal. These include Australian Title Blocks, Wall Types, and starter RTE files. They serve as scaffolding but usually need further customisation for branding, AS 1100/ISO 19650 compliance, and firm-specific workflows.
Platforms such as BIMcontent and NATSPEC provide manufacturer-specific data and vetted geometry. These Revit Content Libraries align with Australian standards and codes. Always check version compatibility and compliance before adding Families to your Template.
Communities such as Autodesk Community, AUGI, Reddit, or LinkedIn groups share Templates, Detail Components, Schedules, and Dynamo Scripts. Quality varies, so review Parameters, Reference Planes, and timestamps before use.
For Templates tailored to your workflows, branding, and compliance, engaging a specialist is often the best option. At Interscale, we craft Custom Revit Templates that embed your standards and deliver immediate efficiency gains.
Should you download a free Revit Template or invest in a paid or custom one? Free Templates—such as Autodesk defaults or community uploads—can be useful but are often generic, non-compliant, and require extensive modification. They typically include limited Revit Families and no support, which introduces risk.
Paid or custom Templates, like those we develop at Interscale, represent an investment in efficiency. They ensure compliance with AS 1100 and ISO 19650, incorporate quality-controlled BIM Content Libraries, and come with professional support. Pre-configured workflows and automated Schedules save significant time, reduce errors, and let your team start projects faster.
